Fred Daly Trophy 2016 - Round 2

Round 2 of the Fred Daly Trophy was held on Sunday last April 24th, with Kilrush taking on Ennis at Woodstock GC. The weather was good for golf, bright and breezy with a single short sun-shower early in the round. Unfortunately on the day the Kilrush lads met a very sharp Ennis team that were fresh from victory in the Clare final of the Junior Foursomes the previous week. Mark Shannon had a great battle in the top match and was 2 up through 14 holes - however the strength in depth of the Ennis team came through as they took victory in the next 3 matches to claim a place in the North Munster semi-final on a score-line of 4-1.

While disappointed, the Kilrush lads realized that the experience would stand to them in the future with all of the team underage again next year and the bulk of the team having 3 more seasons to compete at boys level golf. They wished the Ennis team the best of luck in the final against Dromoland GC.

The boys are now looking forward to a summer of sunshine and golf and to dropping a few strokes in handicap!

Fred Daly Trophy 2016 - Round 1

Kilrush Golf Club was put firmly back on the map at Boys level golf on the weekend gone by, with our lads defeating Spanish Point in the first round of the Fred Daly Trophy. It was more than just April showers that caused the host course Woodstock GC to be deemed unplayable and a move to Lahinch Castle Course was hastily made. Storm-like conditions at Lahinch almost meant that the first round did not proceed at all but players and officials decided to press ahead. Both teams must be commended on their performance and perseverance in conditions that at times made even addressing the ball a most difficult task.

With 5 singles scratch matches to be played against Spanish Point opposition, Mark Shannon was first on tee and played a leaders role in winning his match 4&2. He was followed by Shane Lillis and David McMahon who both won their matches early in the back nine. This ensured victory for Kilrush but both Cathal Meaney and anchor-man Gearoid Lillis were up in their respective matches in case at all the results in front were in doubt. Congratulations to the boys on their win and on representing the club in a respectful manner.

Round 2 is next up on April 24th with Kilrush GC taking on Ennis GC back at the original Woodstock venue – first tee 1pm. This will be a big test for the boys as the Ennis team boasts a few single digit handicap golfers amongst their ranks. We wish them all the best on the day – all support is welcome.

Junior Foursomes 2016

For the first time in a few years Kilrush Golf Club was represented at the GUI Junior Foursomes tournament held at Ennis Golf Club on March 25th. A squad of 8 juniors practiced for this tournament in the weeks preceding the event including a practice round at the host club Ennis GC.

On the day the two playing foursome pairings were Mark Shannon & David McMahon and Shane Lillis & Cathal Meaney with Gearoid Lillis & Jason Linnane the travelling substitutes. Conditions on the day were extremely tough with a cold and very strong wind ensuring pars were at a premium and scoring was higher than normal. Foursomes stroke is a difficult format but our boys performed well with a sprinkling of pars on both cards. The 2 teams that qualified to go forward were Ennis GC and Lahinch GC and although Kilrush were not in the top 2 teams we did not have to bring home the wooden spoon either!

Congratulations to the lads for representing Kilrush GC and for being very competitive despite having to give away a few strokes to achieve the maximum handicap of 12.

The junior squad are now back in practice mode again and looking forward to representing the club at the Fred Daly tournament being held at Woodstock GC on Sunday April 10th where they will face Spanish Point GC in 5 straight singles matches. Hopefully we can garner some more support for them on the day.
